Next Time: Dont Be Afraid Of The Dark & Puss In Boots

Hostel Part 3

Phil's quick Capsule Review
Liked Hostel part 1, hated Hostel Part 2, actually thought part 3 (for a low budget direct to DVD sequel) was actually an alright movie.  Okay not ever going to set the world on fire but a tight, occasionally gruesome horror that got rid of a lot of the torture porn trappings of it's earlier siblings.   If people being tied up and tortured for fun is your thing... well this one's for you.

Best Bit: The first hotel kidnap.  Very clever.

Rent, Borrow, Buy, Stream: Rent

IMDB Rating: 6/10

If you liked this try: Hostel (7/10); Cabin Fever (5/10); Hostel 2 (3/10)

Twilight Breaking Dawn Part 1

Phil's quick Capsule Review

It's fair to say that I love the Twilight films as much as I do the Star Wars prequels.  However to my surprise Breaking Dawn is actually not a bad film, even enjoyable in places.   Okay it has it's moments (talking wolves to name one) but for the first time I actually liked the characters and was engaged by the story.  It's still not amazing but getting better...

Best Bit: The Wolves attack

Rent, Borrow, Buy, Stream: Rent

IMDB Rating: 6/10

If you liked this try: Twilight (4/10); Twilight Eclipse (4/10); Twilight New Moon (2/10)

Next Time: Twilight Breaking Dawn Pt 1 & Hostel 3

Seeking Justice aka Justice.

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
A DTV thriller that bagged itself a good cast and ended up getting a cinema release.  That said Justice is actually a pretty good film - tense when it needed to be, action beats to break up the quieter moments and an ending so obvious that it stands out like a drag queen in the House of Lords.  So in short a lot to enjoy.  Good cast as well...

Best Bit: Escaping the bad guys... truck!

Rent, Borrow, Buy, Stream: Rent

IMDB Rating: 7/10

If you liked this try: Taken (9/10); Death Sentence (8/10); Death Wish (6/10)

Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
So meh! that half way through I’d picked up the Ipad and started looking at the news without realising I was still watching a movie. Yes Pirates returns and whilst it’s not a bad film, it certainly does little new.  Even Johnny Depp looked bored.  Pirates By Numbers aka The Ride At The Fairground you have been on one too many times.

Best Bit: Honestly it’s hard to remember.  Okay is was shorter than No3.

Rent, Borrow, Buy, Stream: Stream

IMDB Rating: 4/10

If you liked this try: Pirates of The Caribbean (8/10); Pirates of The Caribbean 2 (6/10); Pirates of The Caribbean 3 (7/10)

Next Time: Pirates 4 & Seeking Justice

Straw Dogs 2011

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:
I liked but didn’t love the original Straw Dogs, so unlike many a remake was sacrilege to me but you can’t help but think a great cast is wasted in what essentially is a very average and very familiar retreat of much better film.  Moving the film to the deep South does nothing for redneck stereotype and whilst a few new ideas do work well and the final showdown is tense it offers very little reason to justify it’s making.

Best Bit: Tense, final show down & bear trap!

Rent, Borrow, Buy, Stream: Stream

IMDB Rating: 5/10

If you liked this try: Straw Dogs (7/10); Last House On The Left Remake (7/10); I Spit on Your Grave Remake (4/10)

The Unbookables

Phil’s Quick Capsule Review:

What happens when you get a bunch of taboo busting comedians touring town to town and drinking lots?  Well you get the Unbookables, an amusing, slightly tragic, never boring look at life on the road for jobbing funny men in America.  Much like it’s protagonists however it’s a flawed but loveable beat and if at the end you are left the feeling of ‘what was the point’, it’s still a fascinating look at a life little seen.

Best Bit: Getting Fired!

Rent, Borrow, Buy, Stream: Rent

IMDB Rating: 7/10

If you liked this try: American: The Bill Hicks Story (9/10); Exit Through The Gift Shop (8/10); The Aristocrats (8/10)

The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo

Phil's Quick Capsule Review
Now this is more like it. Having not seen the original films or read the books, I have nothing to compare this to so on it's own merits I can only say that Fincher delivers an outstanding directorial master class whilst all the cast are firing on all cylinders.  Alongside great direction you have a compelling story that had me on the edge of me seat, the upshot being Girl With A Dragon Tattoo is one of the best films of 2011.

Best Bit: Shoot Outs

Rent, Borrow, Buy, Stream: Rent

IMDB Rating: 7/10

If you liked this try: The Shield (9/10); The Departed (9/10); Narc (8/10)

Sinners & Saints

Phil's Quick Capsule Review
Flawed low budget action film it may be but Sinners & Saints packs one hell of a punch and whilst the pace could be a bit snappier in places, it's as fun as you can have accompanied by a beer & a curry on a Friday night.  Good performances and sharp action direction help no end.  Worth a watch.

Best Bit: Shoot Outs

Rent, Borrow, Buy, Stream: Rent

IMDB Rating: 7/10

If you liked this try: The Shield (9/10); The Departed (9/10); Narc (8/10)
